Update on third founder population released on Pongola Game Reserve
Many of the black rhinos, like this bull, have settled alongside the lake shore and are often seen on the flood plain.
One month on, the 13 black rhino released on to Pongola Game Reserve have apparently settled well and are in good condition. One pair has already been observed mating. (Photos of the pair are shown below. The female is on the left.)
Unfortunately not all the animals could be fitted with radio transmitters at capture – either because they lost their horns or the horn was too small. Only one of those without a transmitter has not been seen since release, so efforts are now being made to locate that animal. She’s believed to be in the northern section of the reserve.
