On Thursday 9 September 2004, round about 16h00, whilest travelling on the way back from Pongola to White Elephant in the Pongola Game Reserve South, we spotted a 'albinistic' Burchall's Coucal, flying across the N2 where it crosses the Pongola River.
These birds are fairly territorial and could possibly be re-sighted to be photographed.
The colour of the entire bird was exactly the same colours as the splendid white/beige colours of the Knob-thorn acacia trees currently in full flower.
The very early rains have changed the beautiful vista of the lowveld savanna bushveld at White Elephant Safari Lodge and Bush Camp into a fairytale landscape. This incredible 'white' display is a true reflection of the high spirit at White Elephant as the owners, the Kohrs family, are preparing to celebrate their 50th anniversery at Leeuwspoor/White Elephant in November 2004.
Visitors to White Elephant will also now see the rare White flowering (usually purple) Tree Wisteria in the Pongola Game Reserve, aswell as our 'white' Elephant in the family herd of elephant.
Patrick Thabete, our specialist observer and local birding guide, caught a 9,9 (make it 10) pound tigerfish while fishing with honeymoon guests from Safari Lodge two days ago. Best of luck to the White Elephant team taking part in the annual Tigerfishing competition Bonanza over the September long-weekend.
